The Father-Son Outdoor Day event was a celebration of connection, learning, and fun, held with the goal of strengthening family bonds in a meaningful way. Fathers and sons had the opportunity to break away from their usual routines and come together for a day filled with games, activities, and interactive experiences. Cedar Creek Corrections Center knows the importance family has on incarcerated individuals and makes it a priority to have as many events as possible.
“These kinds of family events are very important,” Seanne Schlund, Community Partnership Program Coordinator, shared. “They truly make a difference, both for the families and the incarcerated individuals. We see changes in behavior, in the tone of the facility, and for the families—especially the kids—this is something they look forward to. It’s a chance to just be together in a way that’s positive and memorable.”
To participate, individuals must remain infraction-free for 90 days and have their children approved on the visitor list. The opportunity is seen as a reward and a motivator, and the number of families attending continues to grow with each event.
The theme for this event was all about reptiles. The gymnasium was covered in decorations of lizards, snakes and turtles. Creative stations, like painting and crafts offered a fun experience, while allowing loved ones to engage in meaningful conversation and quality time.
In a rare sunny spring day, Kona Ice of Olympia rolled up in their signature snow cone truck, offering colorful, refreshing snow cones that quickly became a favorite among attendees. Families gathered around the truck and had their choice from a variety of fruit flavors. Alongside the icy treats, families enjoyed a hearty lunch and an assortment of snacks, keeping energy levels high throughout the day.
“It’s wonderful, as it feels like you’re on the street at an event, a barbeque, and a snow cone truck pulled up,” Says Earl, incarcerated individual. “That’s something that only happens in the free world, so it gives us a sense of that freedom.”
Then came the main event, a special visit from Scott Peterson, better known as The Reptile Man from The Reptile Zoo in Monroe. He brought with him a fascinating collection that included a python, gila monster, snapping turtle, and even an alligator. Peterson captivated the audience with engaging, hands-on education about reptiles. Kids and dads alike were wide-eyed with wonder as they learned about creatures many had never seen up close before.
Participation in the Father-Son Outdoor Day is a reflection of hard work and commitment individuals are making toward personal growth and family. Events like these promote healthier and more hopeful incarcerated individuals. With each successful gathering, the turnout grows, showing just how powerful even a single day of joy can be.
