TUMWATER – The Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) has selected Melena Thompson as its new Executive Policy Director, replacing Alex MacBain, who was recruited earlier this year to lead the House Democratic Caucus as Chief of Staff.
“We were impressed by Melena's proven experience in developing policy, analyzing legislation, interpreting state and federal laws and regulations,” said Secretary Stephen Sinclair. “Her ability to resolve complex and high-profile issues will be extremely valuable as well.
Thompson brings 20 years of management and administrative experience in state funded programs, a Master’s Degree in Education and experience at multiple state, county, and community agencies. She is currently the Director of Legislative Affairs and Policy for the Behavioral Health Administration at the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS). Thompson has held multiple jobs at DSHS, served as assistant director of policy for the state Department of Commerce and was mental health project coordinator for the Department of Corrections from 2009-2012.
“We’re grateful for all of the hard work and great success Alex has brought to our agency during his time as leader of our executive policy team and look forward to continuing that success under Melena’s leadership,” he said.
Thompson will officially join Corrections on December 10, 2019.
