CLALLAM BAY – On Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 7:30 p.m., approximately 81 individuals began engaging in a physical altercation in the recreation yard at Clallam Bay Corrections Center. All directives to stop were ignored including verbal directives and discharge of OC (pepper spray).

The tower officers sounded the alarm, gave warnings through the speaker, and then resorted to seven warning shots aimed in an unoccupied area. The individuals then stopped the altercation.

There were no staff injuries. Five incarcerated individuals were transported to an outside hospital for medical assistance. Four returned shortly thereafter to the correctional facility. One has been transferred to another correctional facility after receiving treatment for a broken jaw.

It is unclear at this time what caused the altercation. The facility is on restricted movement with cancelled programs and visitation until at least Sunday, May 26, 2019.

The Department of Corrections takes the safety and security of its correctional facilities, staff, and incarcerated individuals very seriously. Following policy, any time a weapon is discharged, both an internal and external investigation is completed. The external investigation is completed by local law enforcement.

Clallam Bay Corrections Center, located in Clallam Bay, Wash., opened in 1985 and houses over 850 medium, close, and maximum custody male inmates.
