SHELTON – Washington Corrections Center in Shelton is the intake and receiving facility for incarcerated males in the Washington state correctional system, leading to multiple transports arriving every day. With all that traffic, there is a lot of daily maintenance that needs to be completed. The person responsible with keeping the facility in peak condition, Don Carlstad, was chosen as a Supervisor of the Year at the 2018 Annual Agency Awards.
Don’s management style creates a safe, healthy work environment that helps to improve public safety. Don oversees a staff of construction maintenance workers, maintenance mechanics, painters, and a gardener. Don and his team also supervise incarcerated workers who are tasked with keeping the facility's physical plant operating smoothly. Helping positively impact inmates for life after release is important to him.
Don was hired as an officer in 2002 at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center in Aberdeen, but quickly transitioned within six months to maintenance work. Experience in construction helped him switch to working as a carpenter at Stafford Creek and, in April 2008, he moved to Washington Corrections Center as a temporary plant manager. A few months later, he was the permanent plant manager.
Don was able to celebrate the award with his wife and eldest daughter at the award ceremony. According to the received nominations, his positive attitude and the encouragement he gives to his employees make Don the type of supervisor to which all should aspire. He always stays focused on how important his team is to his success.
