PRESS RELEASE: Offender Dies after Sustaining Injuries during assault at Monroe Correctional Complex

MONROE – Gordon Powell, 45, has passed away this morning after sustaining injuries at the Special Offender Unit of Monroe Correctional Complex. Powell was serving a 60 month sentence for third degree assault and second degree burglary.
Powell was transported to the hospital May 9, 2015 after sustaining significant injuries during an assault. The assault occurred in a common area of E Unit. Offender Benjamin Price, 35, is currently being held in segregation and prison administrators are working closely with local law enforcement who are investigating the incident.
Price entered the prison system in August of 2010 and is serving a 146 month sentence for first degree manslaughter out of Skagit County. He had an earned release date of June 18, 2019. He also has a prior conviction for second degree assault with firearm enhancement.
The Monroe Correctional Complex, located in Monroe northeast of Seattle, houses 2,400 male offenders in maximum, close, medium and minimum custody levels.
