PRESS RELEASE: Offender Dies of Apparent Suicide at Washington State Penitentiary

WALLA WALLA – The Department of Corrections and local law enforcement are investigating the death of an offender this morning at the Washington State Penitentiary as an apparent suicide.
At about 6:40 a.m. today correctional officers found Oscar Garcia-Pacheco, 34, unresponsive in his cell, where he was housed alone. Staff attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at 7:22 a.m.
Garcia-Pacheco had served nearly four months of a 264-month sentence for a Snohomish County first-degree murder conviction.
Prison administrators are working together with the Walla Walla Police Department on the investigation.
